The reserve is located in the department Oruro, on the border to Chile. The Sajama peak is Bolivias highest peak and the second highest volcano in the world. The volcano, 6.542 meter high, is inaktive for more than 10.000 years now. Its peak is caped with snow. In August 2001, The Sajama was scene for the world's highest soccer game. ON the base of the Sajama you can also find the highest forests Bolivias and the highest queñua-forest of the world. The Park was already put under conservation in 1939 and is therefore the oldest National Park Bolivias. The climate of the park is on an altitude range of 4.200 to 6.000 Metern very cold and an average temperature of 3 – 4 degrees.

Apart from the main attraction, the Sajama volcano, the second highest volcano on earth, the park has a few more volcanoes and high forests, including the highest queñua-forest of the world. Furthermore, the park offers ideal conditions for hiking and mountaineering and also has a few impressive lagoons, geysers and hot springs as well as archeological ruines, stone formations and colonial churches. Within the park you can also observe Vicuñas and condors.

The easiest way to reach the park is to take a bus from La Paz to Arica (Chile) or the other way from Arica (Chile) to La Paz. The village of Sajama is a good starting point to access the park. There are a few basic accommodations and restaurants in the park. Organized climbing tours can be booked and organized in La Paz.
