In the 80ths the biggest drug plantations were found here. The park was named „Huanchaca-Nationalpark“at first until 1988 they changed its name in honour to the biologist Professor Noel Kempff Mercado, that during his last explorations in 1986 was killed by drug smugglers. His report on his exploration missions inspired the writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 1910 for his book „The Lost World“.
In the year 2000 the park was declared world heritage site by the UNESCO.

The easiest access to the park is by airplane from Santa Cruz. The remote park is barely visited by tourists. There are only two accommodation sites and visitor centres, one in Flor de Oro, in the northern part of the park and one in Los Fierros. You can often only access the park in the dry season from April to October. To visit the park you should have at least a week time. It is recommended to visit the park in a organized tour.
