NATIONAL PARKS AND RESERVES
In 1939 the Sajama, Bolivia's highest peak was the first area to be protected by the government, declared the first National Park. Nowadays Bolivia has 21 declared National Parks. The total size of all protected areas is half the size Germanys. Among the National Parks are all climate zones and various unique ecosystems represented.
On an altitude range from 200 to 6.000 meters you will find everything from rain- and cloud forest, dry forests, savannahs, pampas, swamps, bizarre rock formations, canyons, volcanoes and snow-caped peaks. Furthermore, you will be observing a significant number of wildlife habitats, rare endemic animals and plants. Most of the protected areas are still „off the beaten track“, an authentic experience with only little infrastructure for tourists. Since 1998 all protected areas are administrated, supervised and promoted by the Bolivian organization SERNAP, Servicio Nacional de Areas Protegidos, together with a few private non-governmental organizations.
