DESCRIPTION

The park is located in the north west of the department La Paz and borders Peru in the North. The park was only founded in 1995 and belongs to one of the biggest and richest in biodiversity in the world. The Madidi National Park encompasses parts of the Cordillera and the Amazon Basin, from highlands to tropical rainforest and savannahs. The park has a range of wildlife habitats. The climate varies depending on the altitude range from 200 – 6.000 meters.

HIGHLIGHTS AND ACTIVITIES

The park contains various vegetation zones – Pampas, in the north, rainforest in the east, dry forest in the centre and the south even encompasses the snow-capped peaks and cloud forest of the Andes. Furthermore, archeological ruines are found in the park. Another attraction is the ecological tourism project Chalalan ecolodge, which is managed by the local population of the park and easily reached by boat on the Tuichi river. The lodges have their own little rainforest, from where you will be able to observe monkeys, tapirs, caimans and many more wildlife habitats. With a little luck you can also observe various interesting bird species, aras and parrots.

TIPS

The Madidi National Park is oriented on ecological and ethical tourism. In the park you will find ecolodges, restaurants, transportation and local guides. The ecolodges are managed by the local population. The city of Rurrenabaque is often used to access the park. From there you can book organized tours through the park. The best time to visit the park is from April to October. During the rain reason it is often not possible to access parts of the park.
