The National Park Kaa -Iya del Gran Chaco is Bolivias largest protected area. It is situated in the southern part of the department Santa Cruz, in the provinces of Cordillera and Chiquitos on the border to Paraguay. The park is located in the Bolivian lowlands on 200-400 meter. The climate is therefore all year around warm with an average temperature of 26 degrees. Within the park you will find unique and intact ecosystems and rare plant as well as endemic animal species.

| HIGHLIGHTS AND ACTIVITIES |
Part of the protected area is the "Subandino" with mountains, hills and valleys at about 800 to 2.000 meter. This area is dominated by a number of endemic plants and southern Bolivian vegetation. Another attraction is the "Pie de monte” ,a transition zone, that goes from the highlands over to the dry forest plateau. (between 450 and 800 meter). Another area is the "Llanura chaqueña”, an area that stretches east and consists of sand dunes and swamps. The park`s altitude ranges from 450 to 270 meter. The vegetation is dominated by dry forest areas of the Gran Chaco with a significant number of high diverse plants.

The park is accessed through the mission towns of San Jose de Chiqutios or Robore, which are reached by train from Santa Cruz. The park has not any infrastructure and has therefore no accommodation, stores or restaurants. It is therefore recommended to bring sufficient food and beverage supply as well as a tent and a sleeping bag. The area is under autonomous administration of the local indegenous population of the Guarani – Indians . Therefore we can not give any information on entrance fees or restrictions on admission.
