DESCRIPTION

The park is located in the south western part of the department Beni, between the provinces of Yacuma and Ballivián. The park contains various forests and swamps. The park has more than 400 bird species and a significant number of wildlife habitats such as bats, reptiles and amphibians. The park is also home to the Chimane Indians.

On an average high of 220 meters above sea level, the park has a tropical warm climate all year around with strong rain falls in the summer.

In October 1986 the reserve was declared biosphere reserve by the UNESCO. As biosphere reserve the area encompasses unique ecosystems that are conserved together with the life of its local population, the Chimane Indians.

HIGHLIGHTS AND ACTIVITIES

The attractions of the park are a few lagoons as for example the Lagoon Normandia, where you have the possibility to observe caimans. Within the biosphere reserve are a few observation towers from where you can opbserve the unique fauna and flora of the area. Various tours allow you to explore the park with ist impressive rain forests and wildlife. Another attraction is a boat tour on the river Maniqui, where you will see numerous birds and reptiles.

TIPS

The best way to access the park is the town of San Borja, that you can reach by bus from Rurrenabaque or Trinidad. Another possibility is to fly from La Paz, Rurrenabaque or Trinidad. For more information see the website of SERNAP, http://www.sernap.gov.bo.
